Question: My son is a heroin addict. He was severely beaten and left for dead by a gang. He is out of the hospital . I was given this prescription and I would know exactly what it is used for and its side effects. He has severe back pain. Please advise.

Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant which relieves muscle tension and reduces pain. Side effects include drowsiness, tiredness, and sleepiness.
Naproxen is an NSAID which reduces inflammation and relieves pain. The side effects include upset stomach, gastritis, kidney dysfunction, bleeding tendencies. However, the side effects only occur in long-term use. Take Naproxen after meals to reduce upset stomach. He can also take Zantac 150 mg thrice daily to reduce stomach upset if it occurs.
Cyclobenzaprine and Naproxen can safely be taken together.
However, it is best to avoid Butalb-Acetamin-Caff 50-325-40 along with Cyclobenzaprine. This is because, Butalbital when taken along with cyclobenzaprine can cause excessive drowsiness, tiredness and breathing difficulty.
