What Are The Side Effects Of Resperidol When Prescribed For Bipolar Disorder?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Aug 2014
Question: My daughter (48) has been a drug user for 10 years or more (all prescribed). she has been diagnosed Bi-Polar.I think she has been on every prescribable drug for this at one time or another. She has also been taking 5 mg of Ambien for the last few months with NO side effects. The last Dr. visit she was told by him that they no longer prescribe it . She was given a script for Resperidol for sleep, and he said it would also help her with panic attacks and help her with the Bi-Polar. The first night she took it she was kept awake all night with itching , all over her body, scratched herself to bleed in spots. She is calling the office today but the Dr. that prescribed it, but he's only in the office 1 day a week. Thre is an ARPN in the office for emrgencies but she is very hard to get ahold of. I know she will be told to discontinue taking it, but I would like to know why he would prescribe it for sleep in the first place?

Brief Answer:
risperidone is not indicated for sleep problem

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear
I admire you for positive outlook
Glad to see you
Bipolar disorder has two phase
One is depressive
2nd is manic phase

M also confused about her diagnosis

If she jas illness since so many years than I want to know whether it is occur in episodic manner or countinous illness.

Bipolar disorder is episodic in nature

Resperidal contain risperidone which is atypical antipsychotic

Indication of use of risperidone in bipolar illness is only in manic phase to counter agression

It has minimal role in depressive phase of bipolar disorder.

If she is having psychotic fetures along with bipolar than it is used for psychotic features

I m also wondering why it is given for sleep

It has minimal effect on sleep

It is not indicated for sleep at all

There may be some indications apart from sleep

You have told she had a reaction . Posible machanism is unclear but it sometimes hapen in first dose if our body is too sensitive to that drug

But as per my opinion I have never used it for sleep and even not use in panic attack.
it is not indicated at all.

It is antipsychotic drug and used for psychotic features

so need to confirm diagnosis and if she does not have psychotic features than no need of it

M always here to help yoy
Feel free to ask

Thank you
Take care
