What Are The Risk Of HIV After Unprotected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Sep 2014
Question: On August 9th I had unprotected sex with someone who I am unsure of his sexual past (if he has stds, hiv, etc). We had sex three times in the one night. This is the second person I have ever slept with and I am freaking out about my dumb mistake to not use a condom in the moment. I know he is in the military, he is straight, and about two months ago he did donate blood (doesn't mean he can't have hiv). He told me he is clean, but I am freaking out about it. Are my chances of contracting hiv high or low? I am going to get tested tomorrow at a clinic that does the send out lab tests, but I am truly a nervous wreck over this whole thing. Should I be worrying over something like this?

Brief Answer:
Less likely to have contracted HIV

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms,

The chances of you having got infected with HIV is less, almost unlikely. Blood donation 2 months ago does not give a negative HIV status to him. There is a serological window period of 3 months before which serological test done to detect antibodies are negative.
As you are getting tested tomorrow antibody testing will not rule out HIV infection. I would recommend you to get the following investigation
1. P24 antigen asay
2. RT PCR HIV test

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

I found out that this person was tested a little over a month ago and all of his results were negative. Should I still be worried?

Also they did a 4th generation test on me today when I got tested. Are these reliable?

The name of the 4th generation test is HIV1&2 Antibody + HIV1 P24 Antigen Qualitative Immunoassay. I just asked for specifics. At the 11th day would this be effective for results? Or should I go back again on the 25th (which would be the 15th day after possible exposure)?

Do you think my risk is very low after finding out this particular partners test results came back negative a month ago?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
P24 antigen test is specific test

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms

As your partner has been tested negative a month ago, chances of having got infection is less.
P24 antigen assay is quite specific and sensitive test. Negative test after 9 days almost certainly rules out HIV infection. HIV 1 and 2 antibody test are not specific..
