Question: Tried nothing so far. Not a current solution available. But only looking for an abatement for balance and lack of coordination issues, increasing over the last 10-15 years. DNA blood test of 2014 confirm SCA3. Inherited from my mother. Dealing with arthritis issues at the same time.

Brief Answer:
Valproate use may be of help.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Locomotor symptoms such balance and coordination issues are early symptoms of SCA3. Since it is confirmed by genetics, this condition (spinocerebellar ataxia 3j is most likely the cause of your symptoms.

Valproic acid is a drug found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of SCA3. Arthritis in the other hand, should be treated with anti inflammatory drugs (NSAID or steroids). This way, I think you can get abatement of your symptoms.

Discuss with your Neurologist about these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

In my first question, I forgot to mention my primary interest in possible OTC abatements. Are there any that you know of ? Is valproate in this category ?
