Brief Answer:
Looks like Viral illness - Don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi....This looks like a viral illness and it is quite common to have cough when the viral illness is settling down. Kids cannot spit out till 5 years of age... Its normal. Don't worry.

If your grandson is normal in between fever episodes in a single day...I don't think you should worry as its only 3rd day of fever. What is more important than fever is the activity of the kid inbetween 2 fever episodes.

Danger signs include breathlessness/ rash/ low urine output/ seizures/ unconsciousness/ blood in motion. Don't worry if these are not there & the kid is active.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. Happy to help anytime. Further clarifications and consultations on Health Care Magic are welcome.

How high can the fever be before we should call his pediatrician? How many days of fever before we should worry?

Brief Answer:
Viral illness can last 5-7 days

Detailed Answer:
Hi...
1. Fever in viral illness can go up to 104F too. Once viral illness starts it can be there till 5-7 days. Initial 48 hours fever will be very high and then gradually it starts spacing out.

2. As I suggested in my last interaction, rather than duration and height of fever, what's more important is the activity of the kid when there's no fever. During fever, anybody will be dull and down. But if the kid is lethargic even when there is no fever, then seek medical help.

3. By 5th day if fever is still there or if the kid developes any danger signs as I suggested earlier, you can consult his pediatrician.
