Question: I get several ingrown hairs in the pubic region. What causes them? They are painful and itchy. I currently have one that looks infected. Should I see my doctor, or use a warm compress?

Brief Answer:
Result from inflammation because of penetration of shaved hair

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic

Ingrown hair are commonly seen in persons who shave their hair. It occurs because of inflammation resulting from penetration of sharp tips of shaved hairs
If the hair is cut too short it retracts in the follicle and penetrates its wall. Sometimes the hair curves backwards after emerging from the follicle and penetrates the adjacent skin.
You should continue with sulphamethoxazole-tmp ds tablet.

If I were your treating doctor I would recommend you to apply topical antibiotic like neosporin on the affected area twice daily along with antihistaminic like tablet chlorpheniramine 4 mg once or twice daily depending on the intensity of the itching.
Along with this go for warm compresses.
This should help you.

I hope to have answered your query and would be happy to clarify any further doubts.
Regards
Dr Asmeet
