Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: What is the best technique for dealing with spider veins? I have them on my left thigh and behind my knee and assume it has to do with favoring my left leg because of childhood surgery on my right leg. I have tried supplements but they don't seem to work. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
"Radio-frequency ablation" or "Laser ablation.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Welcome back and thanks a lot for sending the picture.

After analyzing the picture with best diligence I can make out that you have spider vein of mild grade and the extent of involvement is also not very extensive.

I reassure you fully that your kind of appearance is quite usual and are very often seen.

In such kind of cases I prefer to do either "Radio-frequency ablation" or "Laser ablation. To tell you simply regarding these procedures: Spider veins are basically formed due to abnormal dilatation of the superficial veins in the skin. There is feeding channel from where these vessels progresses further and therefore the extent of involvement as well the dilatation increases accordingly.

In your case it is sparsely present as per the picture. In such kind of cases I prefer the above said procedures and to be precise Laser ablation is better option. These procedures ablate the feeding channel and therefore the visible veins disappear immediately.

These are very simple outdoor procedures and are quite safe.
There is no food supplement or medication which can reverse the veins which are visible. Though, you can continue your food supplements for general health benefit as well as for the prevention of further formation.

I further reassure you that there is no clinically significant abnormality and does not require immediate treatment. You can go for laser ablation for cosmetic reason only.

I hope this information will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

Thank you very much. Which type of physician does the laser and is there any scarring or side effects? Are they caused by gait or overweight?

Brief Answer:
The laser procedure can be done by a dermatologist or Plastic surgeon.

Detailed Answer:

Dear Sir,

Thanks a lot for your very swift follow up and further queries.

The laser procedure can be done by a dermatologist or Plastic surgeon trained in the same. You can meet either of them who have experience in the same.

I routinely do this procedure and never cause any scarring or any other side effects. As these veins are very superficial so the procedure is not an invasive one to cause any scarring and done almost quite superficially. You can very well discuss all these points with the doctor performing the laser.

For the part of causative factors: There are multiple of causative factors and as per your affected area gait abnormality majorly and obesity minorly can cause the same. In obesity there is more pressure over veins and therefore causing more possibility of formation of impatency and then feeding channels.

In gait abnormality a lot of standing and pressure on one leg can cause the same. But both these factors take a long period of time to cause the formation of spider veins.

You should reduce your weight and if possible can reduce pressure over the affected left thigh.

I hope this information will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.
