Suggest Treatment For Skin Abscess Resulting From Insect Bite
Question: I was bitten by an insect of some sort (can't identify) last week . The wound is round with a hard center with one spot of entry. I went to the doctor. He didn't try to identify the specie but gave me Cephalexin (kefex) to take and Mupirocin ointment to put on wound. What should I do?

You have got a small skin abscess resulting from insect bite. As you are not sure of the type of insect which bit you and since the bite does not look serious, identifying the insect is not compulsory and your doctor has started treatment keeping in mind an infective abscess arising in the area of bite.
Cephalexin (kefex) is a good antibiotic and is usually prescribed for a week or 10 days to minimize and treat any systemic infection arising from the bite. Mucoporicin is a locally applied antibiotic and will help take care of the wound and enhance healing.
Should there be any pain, you can include any of the over the counter pain relievers to reduce the pain.
Please take the complete course of Cephalexin and apply Mucopricin over the bite area twice a day. Avoid scratching the skin around the bite.
If there is worsening of the bite wound even after taking medications for a week then it might require surgical incision and drainage to let out any pus from infection and allow healing to take place.
Incision and drainage is rarely required and most insect bites heal with medications as suggested by your doctor.
