Suggest Treatment For Shoulder Pain With History Of Injury

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Feb 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,

I am having a great deal of left shoulder pain. The current thought is that this is scar tissue that has built up over time after a long ago injury. I am currently doing ARP Wave therapy without any result. I am jconcerned that if this is indeed scar tissue it may need to be removed in order that I regain my mobility in that joint, which right now is very limited.

I was researchine an Orthopedic surgeon in my area hat i may visit to determine if surgery would be the best alternative. I reside in Methuen, Massachusetts.

Thank you for your help!

Brief Answer:
Less likely to be a scar tissue.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the shoulder with a history of injury many years ago can be due to Rotator cuff tendonitis or shoulder impingement syndrome which causes irritation and inflammation of the rotator cuff and the bursa when doing overhead activity and hence pain. The scar tissue usually forms within few weeks of injury and is less likely to cause a restricted movement after many years.
You need to get an MRI scan done which is a more sensitive test for soft tissue and muscular injuries or inflammation. An Orthopedician is the best person to be consulted.

Here are some general treatment measures which you can follow:

1) Provide complete rest and avoid overhead activities.
2) Apply cold compresses and take some anti inflammatory pain killer after consulting your doctor.

If the symptoms are severe then after confirming the diagnosis by MRI, you may need steroid injections or surgical arthroscopic technique (kept as last resort).

I hope this answers your query.

Thank you very much for your help!

Is there any Orthopeidician in my area you could recommend. I have not had a great deal of luck choosing one.

Again, thank you very much! I hesitate to even try Steroid injections as none has ever worked in the past in various other joint issues.
