Suggest Treatment For Severely Swollen Right Ankle

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: I have a severely swollen right ankle. No discoloring. It has been getting worse gradually over the last couple of days. No sprain or twist. It is quite painful to walk (I really can't and am largely immobile), particularly when I first stand. After the initial jolt when standing, the pain lessens the longer I stand on it (within reason). It feels better to sit with my legs hanging than to lie with my feet up. The pain in on top of the foot as well as the bottom. I have had gout in the past, but this doesn't feel like those episodes. The toes have no pain, and the pain is not spasmodic as it can be when I have gout.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Ankle sprain

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

It appears to be an Ankle sprain. An ankle sprain can lead to or be associated with a hairline fracture, an x ray can be done to detect a fracture. Soft tissue injury leading to hematoma can also be the cause and an MRI can be done subsequently if the x ray is not conclusive. If fracture and soft tissue injury leading to hematoma formation is ruled out , hot water fomentation, rest , NSAIDs like Etoricoxib can be advised. If the pain is intense then an I.M injection of an NSAID e.g Diclofenac can be advised by the E.R doctor for quicker pain relief.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
