Posted on Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Question: Iv'E been taking trazodone 200mg as a sleep aid for over a year. I do have androgenic alopecia only on top of
my head which I've been controlling with a product called "Invati". During the past several months, the hair
On my total scalp is falling out excessively from the root.. It is so bad that my scalp is visible over my entire
head. I cry every time I comb my hair, and am terrified to wash my hair, because I lose hundreds of hairs
each time.. I am severely depressed and anxious because of this. Also, my once coarse hair has become extremely thin. I have heard that the same problem has occurred with trazodone. Please advise me. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Minoxidil and saw palmetto

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query.
Androgeic alopecia progresses from grade 1 to grade 7.
This is reason why you have increased hair fall.
I treat such cases with a combination of oral and topical medication.
Topical minoxidil and oral saw palmetto works very well.
These are safe and effective.
You can try this in consultation with your doctor.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Thank you.

Minoxidil is the same thing as Rogaine here in Canada. You also did not say if the trazodone
Could be a contributing factor to the hair loss. The hair loss has always been only on TOP
of my head. However, since I've been taking the Trazodone my hair has been falling out
all over my head. Also, since the trazodone, my very coarse hair strands have become
very babyfine! Please respond! Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Use Rogaine and saw palmetto

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Trazodone is a tricyclic anti depressant.
All the antidepressants have hair fall as a side effect, but these cannot be stopped.
Change of drug won't be beneficial either, hence I didn't comment on that.
You are correct Rogaine is same as minoxidil.
It is the best medicine available to control hair fall.
You have to use it lifelong.
If you stop using Rogaine hair fall will reappear.
Another important point is that Rogaine will take at least 3 months to show some response.
You can also take saw palmetto tablets for 6 months to get faster relief.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Thank you.
