Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea And Vomiting

default
Posted on Mon, 15 May 2017
Question: My husband (60) woke up with diarrhea and vomiting early this morning. The vomiting has ceased. Diarrhea lasted a while. He has had a terrible headache since he vomited. I gave him Tylenol 3 1/2 hours ago per Pharmacist. He has had a couple of Gatorades, some apple sauce and a banana. Is there anything else I can give him? Would some caffeine help? Excedrin or coffee. He has not had his normal coffee today. He has A-Fib and just this week diagnosed in ER with PACs and PVCs. Not sure how pertinent that is, but thought I'd advise you of it. Thanks

Brief Answer:
nothing more... I'll explain in full answer

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

his symptoms sound like a gastroenteritis probably from preformed toxins as it usually presents with vomiting which is following by a short course of diarrhea. Other causes can't be excluded but this is the most likely one.

In such cases we usually avoid eating fiber and food with high fat content and drinking milk. He can have anything else. Rice is a good choice as it is easily digested and provides some carbohydrates to help the intestines recover. Chicken is a good example of food with protein content, without much fat (discarding the skin is assumed).

If his condition gets worse then a visit to the ER would be recommended. If diarrhea stops or gets less frequent then just follow this 'diet' until he recovers.

Kind Regards!
