Question: Went to the doctor & was diagnosed as having scabies! I have had no skin to skin contact nor have I slept in any bed but my own (nor has anyone other than myself has slept in my bed). So how in the world did I get scabies?!

Brief Answer:
This is how you catch it. This is "how to never catch it" again.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

I am Dr. Neel kudchadkar and I will help you out right now.

I appreciate the fact that you are obviously an educated, smart person, who believes that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Thanks for your vigilant dedication towards perfect health and hygiene and having faith in healthcaremagic.com

Let's figure out if you have scabies in the first place. That's really important, you'll agree.

Scabies is caused by a parasite that is an "arthropod". What does that mean? It means that this parasitic insect is just like a fly, mosquito, wasp or a 'roach. Except for the fact that it is so tiny that it is invisible for all good purposes except under a special magnifying lens, under a specially devised beam of light.

This insect "Sarcoptes Scabie" (the bad guys name) then literally burrows into your skin and lays eggs. The important fact here is that these insects come out at night. (They can tell)

A person with a diagnosis of scabies finds that the itching intensifies at night.

Did this distasteful experience happen to you? Try and recall.

They don't stop at that either. These wretched beasts can "attach" themselves to "fomites". Fomites are simply any cloth, cotton, scarf, linen... you get it.

If and only if you really have scabies, there is one and only one way you could have contracted it, that is namely, by "coming into contact with a fomite that had come into contact with a person who had scabies".

The last sentence is worth reading twice.

So what?

I would politely request you to apply your favourite brand of "permethrin" soap. Keep it on for a couple of minutes and rinse yourself. Please sterilize all known fomites that you have come in contact with in your vicinity and your house.

It's OK. You have a no-fault illness.

And now you know how to NEVER catch it again.

That is exactly why I'm confused. I've been led to believe that you can't get scabies from an inanimate object (other than sleeping in an infected persons' bed)!

Knowledge: Your masterful weapon against any bug.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

I appreciate your intellectual interest in this matter. Keep it up.

I certainly respect your beliefs and values. By the way, let me confide in you that as a kid I was led to believe by popular television shows, in little green men landing on earth from XXXXXXX speaking perfect English with a Texan accent.

Beliefs are just that... beliefs.

Let's be practical. This is the plan....

1) I would most politely ask you to scrub yourself with permethrin soap. (Keep it on for at least 2 minutes, kind of like shampooing the body) It kills the Sarcoptes Scabie insects instantly.

2) Somehow, someday work up the energy to grab all "fomites" - bedsheets, linen, hankies... within bounds of reasonable and "healthy suspicion", and "fumigate" them.

That's all there is to it. Really. I am confident that I know this for a fact.

I appreciate the all the information you have shared with me, but you really have not answered my last question. How could I have contracted scabies outside of my home. Also, do they stay in my skin after they die?

Brief Answer:
Scabies! Never Again! This is how it happened & why it'll never happen ever

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

1. I respect the fact that you are an extremely neat, orderly and hygienic person who abhors all forms of dirt, contamination, impurity and "messiness" in general. In fact, in retrospect, that is the best way to handle life in general.

2. I wholeheartedly agree with your viewpoints and opinions.

3. You deserve a perfect explanation as to how such an irrational event such as you, YOU of all people, contracted scabies.

4. Take a deep breath. Relax. And read this very slowly and carefully.
The paragraph below has been custom written to answer your query
considering the fact that you are a unique individual amongst the great
unwashed masses.

"The reason is plainly obvious. If you were outside your home, you have unknowingly come in contact with either a person, (perhaps even bumping into or brushing against a person while walking in a hurry) and have been exposed to the bugs which can easily leap into your skin because they are really very tiny. I again mention that they are so small as to be practically invisible. Except via a lamp and a magnifier specially suited for the purpose. To answer your second question, I would say that, after applying the safe, effective, efficient and powerful permethrin soap & foam. The bugs are instantly killed and simply washed away in the shower stream. I'm telling you this fact is true. This is not a promise, it's a guarantee. You probably know that you are perfectly secure from the bugs, their eggs, and sundry bites and burrows. Ask yourself a very simple question, and you know that you are right when your common sense will inform
you that once the bugs are dead, they will simply flow away with the soap foam from the shower stream into the drain, without leaving a minute trace on your body. You'll be "pure" again. Forever. Of course, as long as you scruplously and meticulously avoid people who have scabies. It's easy to tell them out."

I am very interested in your case. I am very amenable and open to entertain
and answer any further queries you possess, not only about scabies but about
your perceptions of health issues in general, be they practical or academic.
XXXXXXX it has been nice knowing you.

Regards,
Dr. Neel Kudchadkar.
