Suggest Treatment For Relapse Of Pus Cell Count In UTI

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: I had been under UTI medication for 3 weeks . Before that i was having a pus cell count in full range. During the medication the pus cells decreased gradually and then eventually the count range came down to 2-3 which is normal. On completion of the 3 week course, the doctor then suggested to stop the taking any UTI related antibiotics in order to check if the pus count does not spike up again ie relapse. He just asked us to take Urimax once a day and nothing else. For 5 days the pus celount remained normal and then 6 th day onwards it relapsed. The count went up to 40-50. We revisited the doctor and this time he suggested for a cystoscopy procedure. He has asked us to get it done soon.
My query is that shouldnt the doctor have suggested to gradually reduce the dosage of the anitbiotics overtime and stop it maybe after 5-6 months. More like tapering off the dosage of the antibiotics rather than stopping its dosage completely (just presrcibing us urimax which is not an anitbiotic) after 3 weeks when the condition had finally become normal

Brief Answer:
Your doctor's decision is right.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern here.

Your doctor's decision is right to break off the medicine after 3 weeks antibiotic treatment because continuous use of antibiotic may cause antibiotic resistant and harmful to you at this age.

If after 3 weeks treatment you again develop pus cell in urine then your problem needs evaluation.

Your doctor suggests you cystoscopy to rule out the pathology behind recurrent UTI and wants to treat the causal agent.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more questions.

Good luck.

Hi,

Nice to hear from you all again.

Antibiotic resistance means a type of drug resistance in which some microorganism usually bacteria will not respond to antibiotic and survive after treatment with that antibiotic.( to which previously they were sensitive)

Hope your query is clear now.
