Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Chest Pain And Chronic Cough

default
Posted on Fri, 11 Nov 2016
Question: I have been having chest pains every day and mostly at night...I also have a chronic cough that has stayed with me for at least 5 years. I was diagnosed with asthma regarding the cough, and use Albuterol. Not much help which is why I doubt the diagnosis for asthma. Back to the chest pain, when I lie down, the pain goes through my chest to my back. I don't smoke, BTW. I don't have a great deal of confidence in the doctors I have been seeing for both of these problems. But as of the past week, I'm considering chancing it again and checking it out with yet another dr.

Brief Answer:
Possible esophageal disorder? requires confirmation

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam

These symptoms possibly indicate a comorbid esophageal disorder.

It can present as chest pain.

It's important to consider manometry study of esophagus.

Additionally a 12-lead EKG is also required to rule out cardiac issues.

Further management, if any, is largely based on test results.

Post your further queries if any.

Thank you.

what is an esophageal disorder? I know what the esophagus (sp) is but what tests are required to determine that's what it is? And what could cause the problem in the first place? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Esophageal manometry will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam.

Sometimes, an esophageal disorder like diffuse esophageal spasm can cause chest pain due to incoordination of muscle contractions within the food pipe(esophagus).

This can cause chest pain radiating to back.

Hence it is advisable to screen yourself for the same.

Esophageal manometry is the investigation required to assess this condition.

Additionally, CT scan chest can also help you to guide further.

Prior to these investigation, a baseline 12 lead ECG is mandatory to rule out cardiac issues on preliminary basis.

Post your further questions if any.
Thank you.
