default
Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2016
Question: Hi Doctor,

I have developed rashes on my back, left shoulder and underarm since yesterday. I have been feeling uneasy from the last couple of days upon wearing the shirt and today when I noticed there were red patches with some amount of burning sensation as well.

I had fever and throat pain 10 days ago and was on antibiotics recommended by a general physician. I have taken them for 3 days and stopped it.

Brief Answer:
Herpes Zoster; Oral Antivirals

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writting to us.

I have gone through your query and I have also reviewed the images. I can see red patches and red, grouped, raised bumps. You seem to have developed herpes zoster.
Herpes zoster usually presents with grouped, raised, fluid filled bumps in a stripe like pattern along with pain and discomfort. The lesions are usually distributed to just one side of body with a sharp midline demarcation.
If i was the treating doctor I would suggest an Oral antiviral e.g Acyclovir Or Valacyclovir for a week. Oral antivirals are prescription medications and I suggest that you visit a doctor in your vicinity for the needful.
I would also suggest a pain killer e.g Ibuprofen for symptomatic pain relief.

Regards

Thanks doctor for your response.

I have consulted a Dermatologist and he has also recommended the same medicine which you have advised. He told me to take Valcivir 1000mg three times a day along with other medicines (see attachment). He also mentioned it might 15-20 days for the healing.

It is mostly severe in the underarm region and is causing a lot of discomfort. Could you please have a look and let me know if there is anything else I can do. Also please let me know if there are any restrictions in the diet.

Thank You !

Brief Answer:
No dietary restrictions; Oral antivirals would take a week to dry up the skin lesions of zoster

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

You may use a topical antibacterial cream e.g mupirocin cream Or framycetin cream (soframycin), twice daily at affected areas.
Also I would like to add a painkiller e.g ibuprofen, twice daily, for symptomatic pain relief. Rest all the medicines are perfect.
There are no dietary restrictions.

Regards
Wish you a speedy recovery.
