Question: Tripped over dog and diagnosed with comminuted fracture of r great toe hallux. 2 complete fractures and 2 cracks. Put in air cast, out of work for one week and then allowed minimal weight bearing. Using a knee scooter to get around. Return visit 2 weeks later cracked areas were now fractured so foot was casted, RTO 2 weeks later, now Dr. says displaced fracture, no work for 4 weeks - no weight bearing, Numbness and tingling in first 2 toes, feels like hard lump under ball of foot, constant leg cramps. Getting very discouraged. Dr. says surgery and off work for 4 months and on crutches (I have no balance) if not improved in next 2-3 weeks. Getting so discouraged. Can't afford to be out of work. Any words of wisdom?

Brief Answer:
Needs surgical fixation if displaced.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Fracture and displacement of the great toe hallux will interfere with weight bearing and needs proper reduction and fixation to be able to walk normally again. in the cast if the proper reduction is present then it can heal conservatively also. in case the fragments are displaced in the cast also then surgery is the only option. You can keep the foot elevated on a pillow while resting to reduce the swelling. The tingling will reduce on its own once the swelling subsides.
I hope this answers your query.
