Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: I have been having nausea, loss of appetite, hot flashes(fever?), and general weakness for about a week. Now I am having frequent (once an hour or less) loose bowel movement. I had a bout with C-diff last fall, so I am wary of antibiotics.

Brief Answer:
Body temperature, stool exam and culture, diet history, See Dr

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

It might be important for you to take your body temperature. This is extremely important in making a decision to treat this as an infection or not.

Frequent bowel movements also might simply arise due to a change in diet, or at times intolerance to particular foods. It might be interesting to check if you have introduced or eaten meals you are not used to eating lately. It might also be necessary to check properly the quality of food you have eaten.

Frequent bowel movements, often accompanied by abdominal pains, nausea and fever might generally be caused by infections. Most of the time viral and could also be bacterial. Doing a proper clinical review, stool examination and culture could help in identifying the exact causative organism and drugs that can cure the disease in case it is an infection causing this.

have you taken antibiotics within the past two weeks. If no, then its fine.

I understand the fear you have for antibiotics, especially the incident with Clostridium difficile infection. It might be interesting to note that antibiotics that are not associated to this infection can be chosen to treat you, in case a bacterial infection is identified. There are appropriate drugs to treat this infection too. dangers of sparing an infection can be more dangerous.

Thanks and kind regards. I suggest you consult your doctor, get a stool examination and culture done. Knowing an objective body temperature and recent dietary and drug history is of utmost importance.

Thanks and kind regards as I wish you the best of health.
