Suggest Treatment For Muffled Hearing In A Child

Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: My daughter is 10 and for the past few months has complained about muffled hearing. She passes hearing tests. Her MRI shows mild mucosal thickening mastoid air cells. What does that mean? Can that cause the ear issue?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be due to chronic otitis media

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health care magic.

Mastoid air cells are indicative of problem in middle ear cavity. Mucosal thickening indicates chronic inflammation. Combinedly they indicate a condition called chronic otitis media. It seems that your daughter suffers from frequent episodes of cough and cold. This leads to blockage of the Eustachian tubes that connect between the inner throat and the middle ear cavity and the resultant air pressure difference leads to hearing disturbance.

Giving steam inhalation should help. Also get an ENT consultation done.

Hi. She did not have chronic ear infections. I would say she was treated once or twice a year. Is that chronic? I'm not sure. She does get sick often. How serious can this be?

Brief Answer:
Still the same diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

You confirm her frequent sickness and each episode actually contributes to the unnoticed inflammation in the middle ear cavity. With proper management things would be back to normal. Untreated, condition would worsen. Gurgling with lukewarm water and taking steam inhalation should be the mainstay of treatment.

She should be given colourful fruits and vegetables on regular basis. They would boost her immunity. Get her tonsils examined.
