Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: My wife is Type 2 diabetic since last several years.
Recently she has been prescribed with Semitribet -1 before breakfast and before dinner.
She gets very uncomfortable when the sugar level drops below 140. This includes palpitation, internal shivering etc.
Now she has been asked to replace semitribet- 1 before dinner with Pioz7.5MS.
Pl advise if the new drug will help.

Brief Answer:
The new drug won't cause low sugars

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXX,

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.

The new drug is pioglitazone - will not cause low sugars and she will be comfortable with it.

Since she cannot tolerate low blood sugar the medications that won't produce low sugars like Metformin, Pioglitazone and Gliptins are a choice for her. Pioglitazone is a very good drug in controlling blood sugars , but is associated with weight gain and bone osteoporosis. I usually prefer Gliptins - though they are expensive when compared to pioglitazone.

There are several medications and insulins for controlling diabetes and the choice of the medications depends on patient and doctor preferences

Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you
