Suggest Treatment For Itchy Dry Skin On Feet And Degenerative Joint Disease

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: I was still having trouble with dry skin on my feet and itching. I found the ointment my Dr prescribed was to calm the itch only. My Pharmacist told me to try an anti-fungal and I found that if i use that in addition to moisturizers and don't wear socks I can control it.
Now I have an additional problem. I still have dry cracked feet, but a place that I thought was just cracked might have a small piece of glass in it. I can't get it out and it's just under the joint that is usually affected with bunions. It hurts very much and is now throbbing. Walking is difficult and my doctor closed for the week-end at noon yesterday.
Could this actually be something like Gout? I had an xray of my foot done because I was having so much trouble with my toes and foot and that only showed degenerative joint disease. I don't even know what Gout is, but my doctor asked me if I had it.
I need to do something, because i can barely walk. I really think there is a piece of glass in it.

Brief Answer:
glass needs to come out

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I am sorry you are having so much pain. It would be very unlikely to have the first diagnosis of gout at 65 years old. Gout is a condition where there is a problem metabolizing purines (in a lot of foods) so people who eat purines in the diet like fish, shellfish, organ meats, asparagus often develop painful crystals in the joints and it is usually in the first joint of the great toe. It is not impossible that you have it but it is unlikely.
If there is glass in your foot then you will need to see a doctor to get that out. You could go to an urgent care if your doctor is not available now.
The cracking may mean that you are not well hydrated, so make sure you are drinking plenty of water and avoiding caffeine and alcohol because they are dehydrating.
Using moisturizers like eucerine cream can also help with the cracking.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
Regards,
Dr. Robinson
