Suggest Treatment For Injured Left Ankle And Calcaneus Fracture

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: Hi Dr XXXXXXX
I have been to see my consultant with my calcaneum fracture. The bone has healed well and I can now weight bear and can try a trainer for a short while. I am now able to walk up the stairs and down with my crutch and am walking with one crutch around the house. I have more exercises to do from my Physio who is also pleased with foot. I am at week 7 today but the problem I am having is my left side ankle (injured foot left) is just really painful on walking. The consultant checked it on the x Ray and himself and there is nothing evident. The Physio also checked and says its just weak. I have a support for my foot and ankle and am still wearing my boot. Is it worth trying the support with whatever footwear I am wearing, and is this normal. It is painful. Am I doing too much too early?

Thank you
Annmarie

Brief Answer:
It is due to stiffness.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the left side ankle can be due to a stiffness in the area. It is a normal finding after being non weight bearing for 6-7 weeks. If on X-ray no abnormality has been detected it means the bone has healed well. Gradual increase in exercise will help in decreasing the stiffness. Passive stretching exercises will also help.
It is better to wear the boot or use an elastic bandage for a good support in the area. Doing a hot compress will also help.
Gradually increase the exercise till the pain starts so that you can spend adequate time on exercise without causing any damage to the foot.
I hope this answers your query.
