Suggest Treatment For Hair Loss And Male Pattern Baldness

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Nov 2016
Question: I have early signs of male pattern balding. My doctor prescribed me Finpecia (finasteride) 1mg capsules and Hairjoy (Minoxidil 5%) solution. He has also prescribed me Logihair, and the product package says that due to similarity with finasteride, it should not be prescribed together. Can you please advise me on whether this combined prescription is alright or does it have contraindication?

Brief Answer:
Take either finasteride or logihair (saw palmetto)

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your question and I have noted your concern.

Logihair contains Saw Palmetto as the main active ingredient. It has similar mechanism of action as finasteride has in androgenetic alopecia i.e inhibition of 5 alpha reductase enzyme in hair follicles and prevent conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Therefore combining these two drugs is irrational.
Moreover combining these two can lead to a higher risk of sexual side effects like loss of libido.
You may take either finasteride or logihair but not both.

Hello Dr. Kakkar,

Thank you for your detailed response. I have these follow-ups.

- How big of a flaw was it on my doctor's part to prescribe such a medicine? I'm shocked that he'd do such a thing, especially since Logihair's patient booklet itself says that the medicine should not be combined with Finasteride.

- I have taken Logihair for five days now. Is it safe to stop?

- Before Logihair, I was taking Adgain capsules every night (along with Finasteride in the morning and applying Minoxidil twice daily) as per the same doctor's prescription. Is it safe to go back to that?

Brief Answer:
Remedy for hair fall/ androgenetic alopecia

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Combining logihair and finasteride is of course irrational.
You can continue with either logihair Or with finasteride but not both. Yes, you can combine adgain with either logihair or finasteride along with minoxidil.
Finasteride with minoxidil and adgain was a good combination. You can surely continue with this.
