Question: I have IBS. In the last 3 months I have had two episodes of gastroenteritis, one lasting 5 days, one lasting several weeks. Now I have bloating and some discomfort in my lower abdomen. I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy next week. How do I deal with the discomfort in the meantime?

Brief Answer:
Diet rich in fruits and vegetables and Bisacodyl would help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this bloating and discomfort in the abdomen that you have reported. With IBS, this is not unexpected but needs to be managed well. Generally, good diet comprising much fruits, vegetables and water would offer relief. In addition, Bisacodyl would relax the painful contractions(cramping) of the intestines and relief the pain. This drug is available over then counter and is taken at a dose on 10mg 3-4times at most in a day. I believe these would offer relief while hoping that the colonoscopy would shed more light on what the exact problem is and offer the chance to address them once and for all. Much water intake and regular moderate exercise are a good way to boost the system as well.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services and keep me updated as you try this measures.
