Question: I have been fainting when I get overheated since I was a child. Now at 24 I'm still doing it. I've had all the test with my heart and all is fine. I don't workout for fear of passing out. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Need to exclude heat-sensitive epilepsy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and we need to exclude heat-sensitive epilepsy in your case.

There are certain types of epilepsy that get triggered with heat/excessive sunlight/fever, etc.

Doing an EEG would help in the diagnosis.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

How will the EEG show the proper result if I'm not overheated?

Brief Answer:
EEG can be done in over heated state.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

EEG should be planned to be done in overheated state. You can do exercise or walk in the sun just prior to the exercise.

(Just for information, we see a lot of cases of hot water epilepsy in XXXXXXX where people get seizures after pouring hot water over the head. To confirm seizures in them, we pour water on the head in the EEG lab, while EEG is being done.)

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
