Question: dear doctor,

i have been asking this question for the past 3 days. i am expecting answer from Ortho surgeon from USA.

my son who is 4 months old had a deform right side rig cage bone tuck-in.

my question, is this deform will effect his future life. means that he cannot walk properly, or his body will bend to the right side?, the other thing is will this "tuck-in" rib cage effect his lungs development?

please advice and i need specific answers. please doctor, please.

Brief Answer:
Get done chest x ray.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your concern. I have seen all the images you have attached.
No,need to worry much for this. Possibility of floating rib is more. It is normal variant of rib cage.
It is not deformity. And it will not create any problem in future lung development or bony growth.
But better to get done chest x ray for the diagnosis of floating rib.
Please let me know
1. Is he having cough or breathing difficulty?
2. Is he crying a lot?
3. Is he gaining weight?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions,so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.

And he is gaining weight, not crying, not having breathing difficulties,so don't worry for this floating rib.

doctor after my son 1 year old and get x-ray done. will it be too late? actually what is the disadvantage for floating rib cage? is it only cosmetic matter or any other things? if it is only cosmetic problems in the future i do not mind it. i am just afraid floating rib cage will compress his lungs and make his lungs not fully develop, the other main concern will be his walking ability, i am afraid he will be limping while walking or his standing position not in balance when he gets older. the rest i do not mind.

thanks.

No harm in chest x ray after 1 year. And chest x ray is having very less radiation exposure. So no need to worry for radiation exposure.
