Question: Hi Doc,

My son is suffering from post viral cough, no fever though, his doctor asked me to give Levolin with Acebrophylin alternately after every four hours, and Clavam antibiotic. Just wanted a second opinion if it is safe to give the antibiotic with ABphylin?

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is safe, but we need to decide if he needs it.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs. XXXX(I hope that is the correct address),

Thank you for the query. Acebrophyllin and levolin are both medicines that expand the diameter of the airway passages in a person. Without examining your son, I cannot say for sure whether his cough is of a nature where such medicines are needed. I would say yes if he had fast breathing, night cough, sputum/wet cough that is relieved when he spits out the sputum, or easy tiredness when he is playing or working.

Having assumed that your doctor has correctly diagnosed his cough and decided to start the above medicines, there is no harm in using an antibiotic along with it. However, it is difficult to understand why Clavam was added, since antibiotics are usually given for bacterial infections and not for a viral cough or a post-viral cough. Was a bacterial infection diagnosed or demonstrated with a high white-cell count or a patch of pneumonia on an X-ray? If not, he probably does not need the antibiotic. If a white cell count was not done, it probably should have been done to distinguish between the two.

I hope you will get back to me with these clarifications so that we can best decide the way to go forward on this.

Thank you for using the healthcaremagic platform. I pray your son is well soon. When you reply, please do add his age, and attach any reports that you have.

Best wishes,

Dr. Taher
