Suggest Treatment For Clear Feeling In Nostril Disrupting Sleep

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: For the last several years, I have a strange problem that disrupts my sleep, and also occasionally bothers me during the day. Periodically, I have the sense that one of my two nostrils is "too clear"-- that is, it feels as though it should be clogged, but the airway is clear. I will then compulsively try to blow it until I produce some kind of results-- usually when I eventually do, it's a large amount of clear phlegm/snot that shoots outs violently.

It's subtle, but I believe the source of the aggravation may be a slight feeling of a pooling at the base of my throat on the same side, as if the sinuses are draining incorrectly.

The compulsion to blow the clear nostril keeps me awake for hours and is extremely disruptive to my life. Are there conditions this may be associated with, such as a deviated septum or some kind of deformity in my sinus system?

I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I also have extremely large tonsils. I recently had them reduced in size by laser, but it hasn't had an effect on this problem.

Brief Answer:
Recurrent sinusitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

The symptoms described by you seems to be related to recurrent sinusitis. In this condition, the discharge accumulated in the sinuses drain out in the supine position when the opening of the sinuses are towards gravity.

The best solution to combat this problem is to use saline nasal spray 4-5 times in a day to help in easy clearance of the secretions and open up the sinuses. Secondly, do steam inhalation 2-3 times a day, this also helps in reducing the secretions.

If the symptoms persist consult your doctor for a thorough evaluation of the sinuses and the nasal cavity.

Hope this answers your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.
