Suggest Treatment For Bump On Knee

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: I want to be more specific about my condition. I noticed a bump about the size of 1/2" on the outter right portion of my right knee, below the knee but off to the side. The area is not hot or red and the bump appears to be hard. I have had recentyyearly health exams without any significant problem. I asked the Dr. about the bump and he called it "housemaids knee". Now I noticed that the bump is getting bigger and I am developing another one on the other knee only not as big. I have no pain and am not spending a lot of time on my knees.

Brief Answer:
Most probably what your doctor has thought it is.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM,

From what you are describing it looks like its getting bigger pretty fast. Thats what doesn't make me concerned about other things. So, it is most probably what your doctor thinks. It is an accumulation of fluid over the so called bursa of the knee (called Prepatellar bursitis in medical language)
Maybe your doctor has described to you that it is caused by overuse of the knee, frequent kneeling, any truma that you do not notice, or other movements that make the fluid get produced and accumulate there. Thats why its called housemaids knee because housemaids kneel a lot. Sometimes it may not have an actual cause, because some people may be more prone to it then others.

I would recommend to protect the knee for three to four weeks by limiting pressure, repetitive bending, squatting, and kneeling.
Wear a compression dressing to remind you to not bend the knee. Ice may helpp, use acetaminophen (1000 mg twice a day) for soreness in case you need it.

If still worse or not better, I would say to you see your doctor again because when the fluid accumulation is big, it may need to get aspirated Or also if you have pain, you may consider doing a steroid injection which will help with the fluid as well.

Hope this is helpful.
