Question: I have a 7 month old baby boy. When I was giving him a bath the other night, I saw what looked like a bruise on the top of his head.....he wasn't dropped and nothing bumped him there....he does not seem bothered when I touch it lightly, it isn't raised like a bump.....any idea what this is? Could it be something brain related or neurological? I am concerned.

Brief Answer:
Head

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
In the absence of any unusual behavior, there is nothing to worry about. There is no known trauma. This means there is even less to worry about.
Sometimes the discoloration can be a sign of a very mild cradle cap. This is a skin condition that resolves on its own when mild.
Another possibility is that he could simply have bumped his head lightly during play or even during sleep. This to will resolve in its own.
In either case there is noyhing to worry about. If you notice the area expanding, or his behavior changing, I recommend consulting with your doctor. Otherwise, there is no need for concern.

I googled it and it sounds like it might be a cephalohematoma. Can these just appear, is this serious? what would cause this?

Detailed Answer:
A cephalohematoma is the swelling we get when we bump our heads. It is not serious and ultimately resolves on its own. If this is indeed what he has, then it could have occurred unnoticed during at or even during sleep. In the absence of any change in behavior, it is nothing to worry about.
