Question: My son is having breathing difficulty when he coughs. We've been to the dr twice and have been given steroids, antibiotics and an inhaler. The inhaler triggers an attack, coughing with phlegm triggers an attack. He says he feels like it gets caught in his throats and he has an awful time breathing for several seconds.

Brief Answer:
Nebuliser

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking in HCM

I can understand your concern.

Yes it is known that one of the side effects of inhaler might be the cough which can trigger an attack on the other side.

In these cases we recommend nebuliser (aerosols with steroids like Budesonide twice for up to one week) instead of inhalers and/or orally steroids (depending on the his situation).

During the nebuliser he should breath with the nose not with open mouth and the cough will improve or not be present any more.

Please discuss with his doctor for the above because he knows better his clinical picture.

I wish a fast recovery for your son

Take care and feel free to ask me again
