Question: in the last month i have noticed a bony bump grow on my skull right above my right ear. it starts above my right ear and get wider and bigger as it extends and ends where the inion is on the back of my head. and now I'm experiencing the same bony growth exactly the same shape on my left side. i got an Mri and ct scan as soon as i noticed the growth and nothing came up. to my XXXXXXX since its quite noticeable and people have asked me about it. i just do not know what to do or think anymore. i got a second opinion and he seems to just rely on mri and ct scan and not look into it. what could it possibly be if its going on on both sides of my head symmetrically? hard bony painless bumps?

Brief Answer:
likely to be benign osteoma

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query and seen the uploaded picture.

If the CT and MRI are normal, it is likely to be benign osteoma. This is harmless and not cancerous. If you are still concerned, you can get the scan films (not reports) read by another radiologist.

It is better to leave it alone for now. Check for increase in size in the coming months and repeat CT after 3 months.

Let me know if you have more concerns.

Is it a rare case that the bony growth happen on both sides of head same area same shape? Please help with more advise. And is thier a certain reason why an mri would not pick up something as big and noticeable as what I have? What could cause a symmetrical growth on both sides of head? I cannot find any case like this online. Thanks for your time

Brief Answer:
it is not rare

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It is not a rare case that bony growth can happen on both sides of head, same area and same shape.

People do get benign osteomas often and it could be bilateral.

Since this is a gross anatomical defect on the external surface of the skull, MRI would show it just as a change in the contour of the skull rather than a specific finding.

Like I said, going by the image, it seems most likely to be due to benign osteomas. I cannot suspect anything else at this point of time.

Let me reassure that these cases are minor and benign, and hence not reported often.

To be XXXXXXX I have one osteoma on my skull as well similar to yours.
