Question: I sometimes take a very small amount of Belladonna for IBS symptoms, primary gas and bloating. I'm having a lot of that now but in part due to a D and C I had today and a laparoscopy that was done due to a slight perforation of the uterine wall. Would it be okay to take a quarter tablet? I don't know the exact amount of the tablet unfortunately. Micki

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HealthcareMagic!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain to you the cause of your symptoms.

Atropa Belladona belongs to anti cholinergic class of medicine. Anticholinergics are drugs that block the action of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter, or a chemical messenger. It transfers signals between certain cells to affect how your body functions.Anticholinergics block acetylcholine from binding to its receptors on certain nerve cells. They inhibit parasympathetic nerve impulses. These nerve impulses are responsible for involuntarily muscle movements in the gastrointestinal tract. Hence it helps inm irritable bowel syndrome but as movements of intestine is decreased undigested food ferments there and release lots of gases like hydrogen sulphide etc causing gas and severe bloating.

Your increased symptoms of gas and bloating are due to unrestricted use of atropa. I would strongly suggest you to stop taking atropa on your own. It can even cause paralytic ileus.

Drugs suggested
Tablet Rabeprazole 20 mg twice daily for relief in bloating and gases.
For IBS use Clidinium bromide instead its much safer then Atropa.

Regards.
