Suggest Remedy For Pain In Esophagus After Taking Clindamycin Pill

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: Hi,

last night I took a clindamycin pill right before lying down (the last one in my pack). Fell asleep right after because I had also taken 20mg of doxylamine succinate. Woke up an hour later with extremely bad burning and tightness in my chest (heartburn). Took a few antacid pills and the burning has gone down - went back to sleep. However, I woke up today with the feeling as if something were stuck in my esophagus, with a tight painful feeling whenever I swallow. I'm aware that this could be pill-induced esophagitis. Is there anything I can do to relieve this pain, or anything that I should do?

Brief Answer:
Antacid syrups with anesthetic will give relief.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking Health care magic forum.

I have gone through your query. As you told this is pill induced esophagitis. It can last for few days. Symptoms will decrease and will disappear. For pain relief you can take antacid syrup with anesthetic like mucaine.

Take soft foods like mashed potatoes.
Avoid spicy and acidic foods.
Taking vitamin C will be helpful in fast healing. Take in syrup form.
Chew food well and eat.
Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

These measures will be helpful in healing. If the condition persist more than 1 week then consult a gastro-enterologist.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Thank you for your informative answer Dr XXXXXXX I'll follow those directions with regard to food and antacid syrups.

Just a last question: Is it at all possible that the clindamycin pill is still trapped in my esophagus? And is it advisable to see a doctor in person before one week is up, to determine if I should have further examinations done?

Brief Answer:
Very unlikely to get trapped in esophagus.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for your follow up query.

It is very unlikely for a pill to get trapped in esophagus. If it struck there temporarily also it will get disintegrate fast. Pills are designed like that. So you don't need to worry about that.

If the discomfort is not improving or worsening then you can consult a doctor early. In such case endoscopic examination is done by gastroenterologist.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
If you are clear then please rate my advise.
Thanks.
