Question: i was admitted in hospital as i was experiencing strange smell episodes and losing my ability to talk at that time. i had started losing memory as well. I was given Acylovir injections and from last 4 months i am taking LEVASAM 1gm in morning and at night. Now i am feeling quite OK, but feel a minute smell episode if i do some tiring work for a long time. Memory is OK now. A month ago i did MRI brain again and it still showed some swelling in brain. Kindly advise me how long i have to take the Levasam tablets and how much time it will take me to recover fully.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The narration of your history seems to be compatible with diagnosis of herpes encephalitis if MRI is positive and history of seizures and abnormal consciousness was present.
The use of anti epileptics in such cases may range from 6 months to 2 years and depends upon recurrences and brain MRI findings.
The drug is stopped only if seizures are well controlled for 1-2 years .
The episodes of smell abnormalities may last for few years and will improve with time.
You can upload images of your mri and treatment prescription of hospital.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
