Question: My elder sister (Age 58) is having high blood pressure ranging between 90-100 to 160-175. She is taking Betacap TR 40 in the morning and Betacap TR 20 in the evening. The blood pressure has increased only for the last one month. Before that it was normal with Betacap TR 40 only. She is also taking Alprax 0.5 mg at night otherwise she is not able to sleep. Alprax she is taking for the last few years. Please advise how to control the Blood Pressure as this is causing severe headache and uneasiness.

Brief Answer:
A Good Blood pressure control require a holistic approach

Detailed Answer:
HI There

I have gone through the medical details provided by you of your sister and it's good to see your concern for her.
I would like to tell you that a good pressure control should always consists of two important approachs
1. Lifestyle modifications, which includes going for a daily morning walk 45 mins a day for 5 days a week, low dietary salt intake, avoid excessive intake of caffeine containing drinks like coffee, tea etc, include good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in daily diet schedule, and avoid junk and canned food, try to stay stress free.
2. Regular intake of prescribed medicines.

Follow this routine regularly for 3 months and she will surely see a good Bp control.

And for now if she is having headache and her BP is high I would like to add a CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKER like Amlodipine in a low dose. It's advisable that you should personally consult your treating cardiologist and discuss this and get a written prescription for your sister.

I hope my guidance will help relieve her. If I have answered your question upto satisfaction then you can close the discussion and kindly rate the answer or else you can ask if any doubt persists.

I wish her good health

My sister is following a strict healthy diet besides daily walk. She is a vegetarian and does not take coffee at all. As such she takes a very little salt.

Request please clarify the following:

1. What is strength of Amlodipine she has to take?

2. Is Amlodipine has to be taken in addition to Betacap TR 40 in the morning and 20 mg in the evening?

My sister consulted a few Doctors close to her vicinity, but they believe in admitting her in their Nursing Homes and hence she is averse to go to a Doctor. Hence I have asked the above questions so that I am able to start her further medication without consulting any other Doctor. Regards.

Brief Answer:
Welcome again

Detailed Answer:
Start with 2.5 mg of Amlodipine in the evening. Bp monitoring is strictly advised. Stop Amlodipine if Bp falls below 110/70 mmhg.

Hope this will complete your query.
