Suggest Dosage For Cefuroxime In An Elderly Person
Question: I took 14 days of Cefuroxime one 500mg/2x/day for an ear inner infection. (F, 62 yrs. old, 108 lbs, gd health, 3mm kidney stone) completely disappeared as well as the blepharitis I had. However, I do not see this listed as an expectation anywhere and am trying to determine if there is a low dose available or if this is indicative of a latent general infection. I do have primary biliary cirrhosis, stage 1, asymptomatic, incidental finding, take Ursodiol 2- 500 mg daily, no other medications or problems.
Brief Answer:
Probably there was a latent infection!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about this infection you had. Cefuroxime is a very powerful therefore can treat many infections including latent infections which were not the primary purpose for treatment. There is no low dose available and you cannot take this drug on long term basis. With the liver having issues, it is not recommended to take medications which are not very much indicated except prescribed by the doctors.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.

I am sorry that was not as well written as I intended. I unintentionally erased the primary question.
It is the aphthous ulcers that I was delighted were gone. I was told that there is no cure, most liklely herpetic in nature, and that pain relievers, patches, and corticoidsteroids were the only treatment choices. The later not a long term option.
But in order for the cefuroxime to have been effective the infection could not have been viral. Is there another reason the drug could have been effective on the ulcers, or could the ulcers be of another source meaning not herpetic in nature? I can then do more effective research as they do hurt and are chronic.
Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Not all oral ulcers are herpetic!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this follow up query.
Aphthous ulcers have several different causes and herpes is not even a common cause. Most of then resolve spontaneously but antibiotics can accelerate healing in many instances. However, antibiotics do no bring about a huge difference to warrant their systematic use each time we have oral ulcers.
When they next resurface, please upload images for me to review and investigate what the possible cause is.
