Should Medication Dosage Be Changed After Prolonged Consumption Of Oxycontin?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Jan 2015
Question: Yes, please let me know if I should attempt to change pain med. I have been on Oxycontin 10 mg every 10-12 hrs for over 10 years. I have not increased the dosage because I was concerned with developing a problem, habit. That amount takes care of the pain and discomfort. If I don't maintain this level I have extreme discomfort and pain. I suffer no side effects, like I have on other pain meds.

Brief Answer:
Maintaining well- Maybe not necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Oxycontin 10 mg for 10 years is definitely a long period.
2. If you have not changed the dosage, its excellent.

If you were my patient, I would advise you to:
1. As you are already on it, and you are maintained well with comfort, I would advise you to continue at the dose. If you think, you need to increase dose, you are possibly getting tolerance and this is not good and means you need to look for other methods.
2. If you need or want to stop it, slowly reducing dose of oxycontin and replacing by non-opioid pain killers can be tried and it might work.

Risk of addiction and tolerance present. However, use this long and stability from your side, I think you may continue as comfort zone is necessary without it harming self or others.

Do not allow anybody to come in contact with it. Highly addictive, can cause respiratory depression and death.
Try to maintain along with active exercises and nutritious diet. Social activities involvement would be helpful psychologically.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
