Should I Seek Medical Assistance For Severe Pain And Redness In The Back After Receiving A Steroid Shot?
Question: I have back problems and both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. I had steroid injections in my back two weeks ago but I don't think this is related. My back hurt more than usual and I noticed that some of my midsection is sort of red (not rash). Is this something I need to address now?
Brief Answer:
Can be an infection or inflammation.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The increase in pain in the back and the redness in the back can be due to inflammation or infection after the injection. You need to get your blood glucose levels evaluated to rule out diabetes. You need to consult an orthopedician to rule out an infection and get proper anti-inflammatory medicines prescribed.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

I had a complete blood workup a couple months ago and my blood glucose levels were around 80. My internist seemed to think that was okay. (If you're wondering about infections I do have Common Variable Immune Deficiency for which I receive gamma globulin infections monthly.) I think I should probably check with my pain doctor (also an orthopedist) since he is the doctor who gives me the shots. Do you agree? I'm surprised you question my anti-inflammatory meds - I've always had very good rheumatologists. I do have a lot of drug allergies and no one wants to try me on biologics because of my immune deficiency.
Brief Answer:
You should check with your orthopedist.

Hello,
Thanks for writing again.
Since you have immune deficiency the chances of infection are present. You need to consult your orthopedist- the one who gives you the steroid shot.
Hope my answer is helpful.
