Posted on Sun, 28 Apr 2019
Question: My wife had a heart scan last week and her calcification score was 795. That has doubled from last year's score of 325. What can cause this huge rise? She has followed the diet, exercise, no smoking advice but that has not worked. She now has several lesions and is going to see a cardiologist next week. What can be done to improve her situation in the short and long run?

Hello!

Welcome on - Ask a Doctor - service!

I passed carefully through your concern and would like to explain that it is uncommon that calcium score on a CT scan be increased in such a degree along a period of only one year.

Calcium score is very susceptible to technical parameter of the machine and also to patient heart rate.

In different CT machines and when the underlying heart rate was different, there were very different calcium score in the ame patients even after very short periods of time.

That's why it is important that periodic follow ups should be done preferably on the same CT machine and wit hsimilar heart rates.

If other extra-cardiac calcium scores are detected, several issues should be investigated like a parathyroid dysfunction, Vitamin D metabolism abnormality, potential renal disorders, etc.

You should discuss with the attending doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
