Question: My mother is 88 years old and has been on a thyroid medication(synthroid) since the 1970's and has recently been cut back on it by one half. Every since then she has had severe fatigue, weight gain, pain all over her body, no appetite and sleeplessness. Her blood work is all perfectly normal, but she has had no good quality of life since then. Could this be a result of cutting back on medication?

I can understand your concern. As she is a case of hypothyroidism and taking tab. synthroid from 1970. Let me know please what was the dose earlier and what's now? Kindly follow up with detailed history.

As you said dose reduced by one half and the symptoms you mentioned i.e severe fatigue, weight gain, decreased appetite, sleepiness, all these are the symptoms of hypothyroidism. So I think these symptoms may be due reduced dose of tab. synthroid, although her blood work up is normal. So I'd suggest you to consult with your physician and give a proper history. You can increase the dose after consultation. That will help. I think this will clarify your concern. Take care.
