Can Anything Be Done About Blue Discoloration In The Left Foot And Toes After Blunt Trauma To The Shin?

default
Posted on Thu, 22 Apr 2021
Question: My left foot and some toes are blue after a blunt trauma to my shin. I can walk with almost no pain...even worked out...but ankle is swollen and foot is swollen and discolored after 6 days post fall. I assume it is just a broken capillary or vein and gravity is taking blood to my foot. But the foot looks worse than I have ever seen it with prior sports injuries. I am 63 years old and in great shape. Should I see a doctor or just go to the heating pad. I am leaving for a safari in two weeks and cannot afford a problem.

Brief Answer:
Advice to undergo Xray evaluation

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Since you are not experiencing any pain, the most likely cause must be hematoma formation following the trauma. You are at a higher risk of hematoma (bruising) especially if you are on medication like aspirin or warfarin. Hematomas will reabsorb on itself in about 2 weeks.
However, since you mentioned going on a safari soon, I recommend getting an Xray done, to rule out any underlying bone injuries(which is unlikely without pain) just to be on the safe side.
Meanwhile, keep your leg elevated. Take rest and apply ice to the area.
