Question: My doctor prescribed HYdrochlorothiazide for Hypertension. She said to have a test in the three weeks to see the effects of the drug. My test three weeks ago showed my Creatinine level to be 8.0 and the went down to 7.0. The Bun to Creatinine ratio went up from 20.0 to 27.1 which was flagged as high. My glucose went from 98 three weeks ago to 103, I do not have diabetes though but was wondering what all this means since I been on this drug. My potassium is also low.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on Ask A Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that these changes in your blood lab tests are related to Hydrochlorothiazide adverse effects (it is known to increase fasting glucose levels, uric acid levels and lower potassium levels).

Another adverse effect of this drug is the exacerbation of the renal function (like in your case).

For this reason, I would recommend discussing with your attending physician on the possibility of stopping Hydrochlorothiazide and switching to another drug like a calcium channel blocker (lercanidipine, amlodipine, etc.) which do not have these adverse effects.

Hope to have been helpful!

Wishing all the best,
