My Daughter Who Is 2.5 Year Old Is Having Dry

default
Posted on Sun, 4 Nov 2018
Question: My daughter who is 2.5 year old is having dry cough from 3 to 4 days without much symptoms of cold. She used to cough now and then but was active. From yesterday we are traveling and today morning she seems to have little fever as well along with coughing. We have not checked her temperature yet. I believe that she got the cough because of the dust as our neighbouring flat is getting renovated. What medicines we can try now as we are traveling ?

Brief Answer:
Medicines mentioned. No need to worry.

Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such episodes are due to some viral infections and usually they have an allergic component associated (may be associated with the dust from your adjoining flat). I would insist you to try giving her Atarax Drops (hydroxizine) 1.5 ml thrice daily for the next few days and saline nasal drops in case she has blocked nose.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child if possible. It helps in reducing the congestion and thereby the cough. Just sit with the child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief.

If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated. If the respiratory rate is greater than or equal to 40 breaths/min you would need to take her to a doctor for the possibility of underlying pneumonia. If the rate is lesser, you need not worry.

I hope that I could clear your doubts. Usually the symptoms resolve in a week or so.

Feel free to write back.
