My Daughter Is Having A Lot Of Problems With Her
Question: My daughter is having a lot of problems with her ear. She has extreme sensitivity to noises (i.e. plates clinking together) makes her go into tears also just shutting car doors hurts! Loss of balance, migraines. I dont know if it has anything to do with her having some of her parotid gland removed but this has been happening since her surgery! Every doctor i have been to has said she just needs to deal with it!!

1. Migraine Associated Vertigo (MAV) may be the cause of her dizziness and hyperacusis.
2. Any correlation to her parotid surgery will be very rare. That too if Audiometry tests can demonstrate a decreased or absent stapedial reflex on that side.
3. A complete Audiometry: (PTA) Pure Tone Audiometry, (LDL) Loudness Discomfort Levels, Impedance Audiometry, OAE (Oto Acoustic Emission) test, ABR (Auditory Brainstem Recording), VEMP (Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials) tests and a complete set of Balance tests using VNG (VideoNystagmoGraphy) need to be done.
6. Reports of the above will help. Surgery notes if available, can be revisited. Medications received in the past, any ear or head trauma and central (brain) related causes have to be ruled out. Thus many un-related disorders need to be ruled out.
5. Migraine Associated Vertigo (MAV) will respond to anti-migraine medication. Magnesium supplements will help.
6. Does she have Tinnitus? Other options are TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy). This may be of use for decreasing her hypercusis problem.
7. Rarely, micro-ear surgery to dampen the oval and round windows may help in unresponsive cases.
