Question: My daughter is 2.10 year old(weight is 16 kg) is suffering from fever yesterday.

She had little cough and cold from Thursday(7th March. 2019) and got fever of 99.5 degree on Sunday(10th March, 2019) but no paracetamol given on that day. Since it was polio day, we have given her polio drop on that evening. But later on the Monday early morning(2 AM) she got fever of 100.1 degree and I have given her paracetamol Calpol 250mg 5ml(This is the dose suggested when she got fever may be a month back) and Alerid 5ml(This one is suggested by her paediatrician for allergy like cold). Later in the day her fever went on till 100.8 and paracetamol 5ml is given again in afternoon and night. Alerid 5ml is also given yesterday night.

Today morning again she seems to have fever 100.5. Cough and cold has come down little bit. She is otherwise active and having food but face looks little dull.

Kindly advise if it ok to give her paracetamol calpol 5ml(Kindly suggest the right dosage) today again 3 times and along with Alerid 5ml at night and see if she improves or should I take her go the paediatrician today itself. Also, is there any other medication you suggest us to try?

Brief Answer:
Possibly a viral infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Some children are more prone to catching cold and recurrent episodes are seen. Often such viral infections manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol (P-250 or Calpol DS) to it bring down. If you give plain Calpol, the dose for your child will be 7.5 ml. If you give Calpol DS, you need to give 5 ml per dose. Also use tepid sponging. Feel free to continue Alerid.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block. I would not suggest any other medicine at the moment.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.
