Lesion Found In MRI Whether It Could Be A Cancerous Tumor

Question: Hi I have met with an accident on Sep 17 2023. From that night I got severe neck pain and back pain . The doctor took some X-ray and prescribed physiotherapy I got little better but not completely alright . I then went for another orthopedic doctor who suggested for MRI . When I took MRI the doctor said C5-C6 there is a disc bulge 2mm and disc osteophyte complex in C6-C7 2.9 mm . I am ok with those . The only thing which is concerning me is, in MRI they have mentioned that there is a small rounded abnormal signal intensity lesion in C3 vertebral body and the doctor suggested MRI with contrast for characterization and he said since I am healthy with 215 LB there won't be anything serious and not to worry. the lesion is 10.7 x 10.7 x 10.8 mm, I am worrying whether it could be a cancerous tumor . Can you please guide me with the symptoms I am restless and with too much stress right from I saw the MRI

Hi there

Thanks for your query. As per the scan it appears that the bone marrow in the vertebral body is replaced by abnormal tissue. It could be due to trauma, disease of the bone marrow or possibly tumour which needs further characterisation with another MRI with contrast.

It would be best to get the MRI contrast done to find out what the lesion is as there is no way to guess what it is. It’s best not to stress and to take things one step at a time.

Do let me know once you get the scan done for further advice.

I hope I have answered your query. I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Thanking you

Hi thanks for your response I have a follow up question in the report they have mentioned it is small round shaped can you please tell me whether cancer tumor will be round also upon the dimension I think it is of green pea size around the back 10 mm which is 1 cm so let’s assume if it is cancer tumor it may be very initial phase is that right .will it be curable ? Also I have this pain since three months only right after the accident may I know how fast a cancer tumor grow and in a random what could be the possibility it is cancer tumor

Hi there.

Since it is rounded in shape, it is not likely anything aggressive. However, you need to think if you’ve been having pain in the neck prior to the accident as this may be discovered incidentally, during the MRI scan.

Based on your age and general health, it is less likely to be secondary metastatic tumour. Usually if there is cancer then you will have loss of weight or appetite with tiredness. Sometimes it can be a benign tumour which is not dangerous and may be left alone in some instances.

It is difficult to say what it is but usually trauma or tumour can cause this picture. I would get the MRI contrast as soon as possible to find out rather than trying to guess what it may be.

Thanks for the response one last question . Can you please tell me how big 10.7 x 10.7 x 10.8 mm is Can you send me a pictorial representation. Also, I read in one article only metastatic tumors will come in vertebral body . Can metastatic tumors be in small round shape

Hi there

Unfortunately, Healthcare Magic has not given Doctors permission to share images online.

Its about 1-1.5 centimetres in dimension.

Its incorrect that only metastasis occurs in vertebral body. You can have primary tumours as well which can be benign or malignant

Hi I went to hospital and they took MRI with contrast and CT scan as well and shared the attached report can you please look at it and advise me.

Here when I had a word with doctor he said it is just hemangioma a blood vessel and it’s very common also he added CT scan is additional good thing which will show anything happened to bone is that true please confirm I attached both the reports

Hi there

Thanks for attaching the reports. I have viewed both the reports. MRI does mention that you have a suspected hemangioma which is entrapment of blood vessel and usually doesn’t cause any problems and can be left alone.

However there is mention of an arachnoid cyst at the back of the brain which may cause problems with balance or tremors. I advise you to get in touch with a Neurosurgeon to assess and decide a plan.

Hi there

Thanks for your query

Normally microscopic bone structure in the vertebra is made up of plates and rods structure which is not disturbed if there is a benign tumour. So blood collection in such a bone will show ridges demonstrating that the original bone structure has not been damaged. This is how to differentiate benign and malignant. Also spillage of the tumour to outside the bone can also indicate malignant or aggressive tumour
