Does Recent Fluctuating And Low BP While Having Tachycardia Require Medical Attention?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Mar 2021
Question: Just moved and do not yet have a primary doctor. I have isolated diastolic B.P., have been on medication for tachycardia for many years and I am diabetic. Recently my B.P. has been all over the place, but frequently low, 50"s-low 60's and I am extremely tired. Metoprolol has been reduced to 25 mgs. daily. When B.P. is low I feel light headed. Should I wait for an appointment with a new doctor or go to Urgent Care? this has been going on for about 3 weeks. Very unlike me.

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms could be related to low blood pressure or metoprolol adverse effects.

For this reason, I would recommend you to gradually reduce the dose of metoprolol, and even stop it.

I would also recommend performing some tests to investigate for other metabolic causes that may mimic this clinical situation: chronic anemia, an electrolyte imbalance or thyroid gland dysfunction.

For this reason, I would recommend performing a complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels and blood electrolytes.

A head Up Tilt test for orthostatic hypotension may be needed too.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
