It Is Normal For Me To Have Digestion Issues (

default

Question: It is normal for me to have digestion issues (IBS). However, for the past few days my stomach has felt upset. It is an uncomfortable/burning/slightly painful feeling and I find that I am experiencing both diarrhea and constipation. This is not usually how I am feeling when I have digestion problems. Normally if my stomach hurts, it is relieved pretty quickly. I have had a change of diet, the last 4 weeks I have been on a very low carb diet. I was not sure if this may somehow be affecting it. I feel normal otherwise but have worked myself into a frenzy thinking I have stomach cancer. (I'm 22 years old) Should I be concerned by this stomach pain or is there something I can do to relieve myself of this feeling?

Brief Answer:
Gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing 'Ask A Doctor' service for your query,

Have seen your details and I appreciate your concerns.

The burning sensation could be a result of a condition called gastritis where there is inflammation of the mucosa of the stomach.

This mucosa when get irritated by food causes pain. As you have shifted on a low carbohydrate diet very likely you are either having high protein or fat diet both of which are difficult for the body to digest. This causes stagnation and fermentation of food-producing large amount of gases hence causing pain.
To relieve yourself start taking over the counter Omeprazole 20 mg once daily.
Lower carbohydrates and increase fat or proteins slowly. Digestive enzyme supplements can be taken.
Tab Activated charcoal can be taken twice daily for relief in gas.

You would start feeling well in a few days.
Feel free to follow up.
Thanks
