Is There Any Drug Which Will Help With Severe Concussion And The Inability To Retain Information And Memories After Old Head Injuries?

Question: I am 73 now. when I was 18 I had a truck wreck with severe concussion. Lost my ability to memorize or retain information if not used. Still remember poetry from before the wreck. Is there any drug that will help with those problems?

forgot to mention that I also lost the ability to follow the beat in music.

another factoid: I like to draw but I cannot draw from memory, I have to use photos. When drawing models I can't recognize the shift in position and come up with some pretty weird stuff!

This is typical of me: I keep remembering stuff but not necessarily when I need it. I have had three severe concussions since then with most severe (by symptoms) was falling over backwards and landing directly on the occipital lobe area. Diagnosed by self-digital exam. could not remember fall and keep repeating same questions over and over for 90 minutes according to my wife. Oh, same with first accident but the initial blank memory was for nine hours.

Brief Answer:
Family support, psychotherapy, smart aids helps to improve. See details.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I can understand your concern. As per your history I think it may be anterograde amnesia which is caused by severe head injury. Presently there is no any medication available for restoring memory. It improves with time only.

I'd suggest you to do MRI brain, electroencephalography and vitamin B1 level to rule out other possibilities. Strong family support will help you to improve condition. I'd suggest you to use smart aids like smart phones to memorize the things and your daily action plan. Psychotherapy also helps in some cases. I think this will clarify your concern. Take care.

I may get in trouble but a friend said that they use meth in small doses to activate memory in those unable to follow things in minute to minute and day to day recall. Was he right or wrong.

I don't think so. See details.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back.

I can understand your concern. I don't think that meth in small doses activates memory. . But long term use of meth causes disturbed thinking and motor skills, Memory loss, Aggressiveness, violent behavior and Mood disturbances. Kindly follow all measures as suggested. Take care.
